Meet Our Staff

Curious about our staff this year? Well, we have some great returns and some happy additions this year!

robby

Robby Hilliard

Robby Hilliard works as a quality analyst doing software testing in mundane life. His hobbies include attempting to write speculative fiction, playing traditional Irish music on fiddle, accordion, mandolin, and guitar, reading science fiction, and intermittent filking.

amber

Amber Hansford

Amber is someone who thinks that she has so much more time on her hands than she actually ends up with. She’s a little too much into pop culture, stating many times before that she doesn’t need a life when she has her television, music, and her books. She’s been singing in filk circles since she was a child, and now she’s bringing her own daughter to learn the fun of filking.

She writes occasionally for herself and also for others, some now and some in the past, along with sharing everything interesting that comes across her twitter feed and facebook profile. She is also a web and graphic designer which takes up a lot of her daytime.

pat

Pat DeVarennes

Patricia deVarennes is a published writer of many things, from genre fiction & non-fiction to technical papers, to original music and parodies. From her years as an occasional stringer for Cinefantastique, she developed a fascination for special effects and “B” films. Now and again, she’s a reluctant investigative journalist, as well as an occasional genre reviewer at fanaticspace.com under the moniker “Shiny1″. Back in the dark ages, Pat wrote, scored, directed and appeared in authorized musical adaptations of the popular fantasy novels Thieves’ World™ and DragonLance™.  She’s a fan of all types of music. Oh, and she also has two Executive MBAs, one of which was most useful in helping her to finally understand her 401k. She’s learned to play video games in her middle age, and has come to accept that she can’t stop filking.

rowan

Rowan Artemis

Rowan Artemis is fairly new to DragonCon and completely new to the DragonCon staff. She as been bouncing-off-the-walls excited about being a part of DragonCon 2010 since the convention last year. No other track excites her the way the FIlk Track does.

The daughter on a proud filker, and an avid karaoke-er of several years, Rowan has written a few filk parodies of her own. Mostly, she contents herself with repeating filk written by people far more talented than she. What she lacks in talent, she makes up for in enthusiasm.

In an attempt to channel her excess creative energy, Rowan also makes a webcomic called Gnome You Didn’t. Starring a pink-haired gnome named Nilsa, Gnome You Didn’t combines adventure, fantasy, humor, and much breaking of the fourth wall into a light hearted comic enjoyed by diverse audiences. (Rated PG-13)

Rowan is honored to be included in the incredible Filk Track, and she is looking forward to seeing everyone at this year’s con!

Alex Boyd

I’m a professional drummer living in Kansas City but I am willing to and have played anywhere and everywhere. I’ve played in more bands than I can remember and some I’d like to forget, lol I’ve played pretty much every style imaginable, rock, country, blues, jazz, latin, punk, hip-hop, reggae, metal, acoustic and gospel music. Current bands you’ll see me playing with are (Some more than others, check my schedule for where I’ll be) the Kansas City Pitch Award Nominated Blues Band Coyote Bill and the Wild Ones, Internationally Renown blues band Scotty Boy Daniel’s Blues Band, future indie/pop sensation My New TV Set, Alternative Rock Cover Band Orange Crush, Country cover bands Cross Thread and The Chainjun Tymes and my jazz band titled M.A.R.C. that features some great players who are really good friends of mine. I also play drums at a couple different churches from time to time. I’m just trying to stay busy and enjoy playing the instrument I love so very much and meet new people and enjoy the life God has given me. I love to smile, I love to laugh, and I love to groove. I teach drums at Spencer’s Music Room in Olathe, KS.

Raven Tidwell

Raven Tidwell

Raven Tidwell is a part-time Visual Novel programmer who grew up surrounded by nerd culture. He’s pretty new to this whole filk thing, however, having only discovered it three years ago, but he digs the music. He has yet to actually attempt writing a song of his own, though he’ll probably try his hand at this whole songwriting thing.

As a forewarning, should you catch him singing, you should probably cover the ears of small children. He has a knack for singing bawdy songs badly.
